For those of you who like me have been on Twitter for a number of years you will know that Twitter has changed significantly… some of the changes have been great and done not so great (ahem star / favourite button!) One of the things that has stayed the same though is “what’s happening in the world right now” what wonderful words they are … despite them being so often forgotten. Over the years Twitter users have changed the way they use Twitter and some of that “here and now” has gone.
Now, dear reader I don’t want you to get me wrong, I really have no problem with the change …all of social media is constantly evolving and that’s great. However in a world where we are forever lamenting on the past or planning for the future I find myself wanting to celebrate the here and now. There’s something wonderful about a social media that lives in the moment.
Of course you may think that seven little words are of very little consequence however I think that they are core to Twitter culture. Back when I started tweeting (excuse me whilst I adjust my rose tinted glasses) we used to Tweet in the moment but we now use Twitter to talk about the past, to market, to crowdsource, to network, to sell, to learn etc etc …. again none of these are bad things but great things happen when we live in the moment. I do like a good analogy … so here is one about a firework (bear with me!)
A firework is one of the most transient things in this planet. It exists for the shortest amount of time, it creates a large bang and a beautiful spectacle … yet it is gone in the blink of an eye. Every year on Nov 5th or New Year’s Eve millions of people gather to watch fireworks and be in that moment. Each event creates a wonderful feeling and some are part of wonderful stories that stay with us always .. yet the firework remains here and now. No one is afraid that a firework is transient, they don’t try to make it longer and the humble firework is always a massive hit.
The next time you tweet or plan a Twitter event try and think about embracing the origins of Twitter and what’s happening now … let’s not loose the amazing-ness of being in the moment, shine bright and bring joy for a short amount of time … be more firework & your posts could stay with someone forever.
